Theres a Ghostbusters III in the works and GB original Dan Akroyd thinks the story is really good.

Just in time to put that 2016 reboot firmly behind us, the promise of a third instalment for the 1984 franchise was confirmed last week.

Whats more, it could reunite Stantz, Venkman and Zeddemore for the first time in almost 30 years with a follow-up to the story of 1989s Ghostbusters II.

Akroyd told The Big Interview last week: There is a possibility of a reunion with the three remaining Ghostbusters. Its being written right now.

The actor forged the ultimate ghost protection service with Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson and the late Harold Ramis in a blockbuster that raked in over $300 million (£217m) in worldwide box office revenue.

Five years later, it gave birth to a successful sequel and now Akroyd thinks Murray will be game for a third.

I think Billy will come, he continued. The storys so good. Even if he plays a ghost.

Unfortunately, the 2016 female reboot – headed up by Kristin Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones – found less success.

Afterwards, Ivan Reitman – who directed the first film in 1984 and was producer on the reboot – revealed that several sequels are in the works at Sony.

However he didnt specify whether the next outing will involve the female stars.

He said: Theres going to be many other Ghostbusters movies, theyre just in development right now.

The follow-up film struggled to break even in the US during the first week of release.

The Hollywood Reporter claimed at the time of its release that Sony bosses were preparing for steep losses and an uncertain future for the franchise.

There was some hope when, in March this year, Sony/ATV Music Publishing announced that a series of Ghostbusters Live In Concert events were coming.

Global film screenings of the 1984 original will be accompanied by a live orchestra when the franchise makes a return in 2019.
