Ridley Scott has started production on a sequel to Gladiator, 18 years after the original.
The director is reportedly taking on the project with a script set to be written by Peter Craig, known for films like The Town and the upcoming Top Gun: Maverick sequel.
According to Deadline, Gladiator 2 will follow the story of Lucius, the son of Lucille (Connie Nielsen) following the death of Maximus (Russell Crowe) in the first flick.
If youll recall, Lucius was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), and watched on as his uncle was killed by Maximus in the gladiator arena.
The original Gladiator scored 11 Oscar nominations and five wins, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe.

A Gladiator sequel without Crowe as a central figure could potentially be a disaster, but lets hope this follows in the vein of sequels to other Ridley Scott classics like Blade Runner: 2049 and Aliens.
This isnt the first whisper of a Gladiator sequel though, with Nick Cave having written his own follow-up which saw Maximus brought back from the dead.
Scott is currently directing his first TV series Raised By Wolves and is also set to helm a drama with Scarlett Johansson about photojournalist Lyndsey Addario.
