“It's 2018, and we are kicking off the year right,” Savannah Guthrie announced on Today Tuesday morning. “Because Hoda is officially the co-anchor of Today.”
Hoda Kotb, who has long hosted the show's 10 A.M. slot opposite Kathie Lee Gifford, stepped into the early morning hour of Today after NBC News firedMatt Lauer following multiple accusations of sexual misconduct. NBC News chairman Andy Lackmade the announcement of Kotb’s official promotion on Tuesday morning; as The Hollywood Reporter confirms, Kotb will continue to host her traditional late morning hour with Gifford in addition to her new spot in the co-anchor seat.
“This has to be the most popular decision NBC News has ever made, and I am so thrilled,” Guthrie said Tuesday morning as she and Kotb made the announcement on Today. Kotb said she was pinching herself, adding, “I think we should send some medics to Alexandria, Virginia, where my mom has likely fainted.”
The two appear to be genuinely excited about their new arrangement, and as has been proven in the weeks following Lauer’s dismissal, their warm chemistry seems made for morning TV. Like the CBS This Morning team of Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King, the duo of Guthrie and Kotb handled the Lauer fallout with both candor and poise—and both teams have been rewarded in the ratings, which have held steady or even risen despite the exit of two TV juggernauts over sexual misconduct allegations.
“It's so exciting,” Guthrie said as she and Kotb wrapped up their announcement. “Hoda, you are a partner, and a friend, and a sister, and I am so happy to be doing this.” Kotb’s reply? “There's no one I'd rather be sitting next to in 2018 than you.”
