Holby City review with spoilers: Joy for Dofty, heartbreak for Berena

What a beautiful episode. There was happiness, there was sadness, and thanks to a wonderful script by Ed Sellek (the man who once gave us Hanssen playing the theremin) there were a lot of funny lines and quirky moments. It was Holby City at its best.

Jason and Gretas wedding plans were shattered by a falling window at the church, which injured several people, including Morgan the Organist, Lexy the vicar and chief bridesmaid Sydney Somers (she and Greta go back a long way, you know. Holby is smaller than you think). Poor Morgan the Organist got hit right in the middle of Pachelbels Canon – ouch – and Lexy had a huge shard of glass with a face on it stuck in her.

Lexy has been around for several Holby big moments, including the wedding of Digby and Morven. Most importantly to this story, she was around just after Serena lost her daughter Elinor, and so she knows Serena rather well. She immediately spotted that there was something wrong between Serena and Bernie, and it had something to do with Dr Leah Faulkner. She advised Serena to talk about it, either to her or to Bernie.

So Serena had the difficult conversation with Bernie, who was actually quite understanding (But it hurts). Maybe there was hope for Berena after all?

But all through the episode, even after Bernie knew about Leah and it seemed they could move past it, Serena didnt look quite convinced. Then Jason nailed what it was. He told Serena that Bernie didnt seem the sort to push a swing. I didnt fall in love with Suburban Bernie Wolfe, Serena told Bernie later. She fell in love with the woman who loved adventure and travel. And Bernie replied that she fell in love with Serena who loves her family and wants a more domestic sort of life. They agreed theyd always love each other, but they couldnt be together because it would mean one of them compromising too much and they loved each other too much to do that. Were just not the right sort of animal, Bernie said, sadly, referring to her reading at the double wedding.

Because as well as heartbreak, two couples got married. Zav, with the help of bridesmaid Syd Somers, managed to deck the Holby garden up for a festive, if very cold, wedding for Greta and Jason. As Lexy was recovering from having a large glass face removed from her abdomen and couldnt perform the ceremony, she called in a favour from her old pal Henry de Havilland (Reverend Richard Coles), who officiated at this unorthodox wedding in a snazzy brocade jacket.

A happy day for Dominic and Lofty (Picture: BBC)

Dominic spent the episode first avoiding Lofty, and then making a big announcement about how much he loved him in front of the whole of Keller. This made Lofty literally run and hide, because he still worried that Dominic was all gestures. It took a pep talk from Greta to Dominic, and Robyn (from Casualty) to Lofty, to make them both realise theyre meant to be with each other. So they got married, with Hanssen walking them down the aisle and Lofty singing Only You at the reception at Albies. It was so lovely that I almost forgot to wish that Sheilagh Chiltern and Carole Copeland had been there.

And in the middle of all the love and romance, Bernie Wolfe quietly slipped away with a little salute (after promising Serena that if anyone ever hurts her Bernie will be on the first plane home), as Serena joined a conga line with her nephew and his new wife and the rest of her Holby family.
