It was an emotional one on Holby City tonight, as two relationships hit crisis point with very different results. At the start of the episode Dr Leah Faulkner was adoringly admiring Serena Campbells suturing style. Serena, keenly aware of the sexual tension between them since their kiss last week, told Leah it would never happen again. Then she tried to get in touch with Bernie in Nairobi – and we learned that the two of them hadnt been in contact for three weeks.
This all led to a passionate encounter between Serena and Leah in the on-call room. I think we were supposed to conclude that Serena enjoyed this, because when someone covered her eyes with their hands later she looked pleasantly amused. Then she realised it was Bernie, and not Leah, and had to make some swift mental adjustments.
The reason for Bernies silence had been that shed been planning this trip for a while, but knew shed never manage to keep it a surprise if shed actually spoken to Serena. If only she had spoken to her, Serena may not have felt neglected and fallen into the arms of Dr Faulkner. Guilt made her tense and stroppy. What happened to absence makes the heart grow fonder? Bernie asked Donna. Too much distance makes it wander, Donna replied without thinking.

Bernie had more news. Shes been talking to Connie Beauchamp about a job in the trauma theatre in the ER, and has handed in her notice in Nairobi. She told Serena she was coming home. That this news wasnt greeted with the joy it might have been was due to Serenas guilty conscience – shed been just about to tell Bernie about her little fling. And what about Bernie telling Fletch that Nairobi was her dream job and she was planning to stay there for at least a year or two? Theres still a lot to talk about, I think.
Meanwhile, the episode started on the eve of Dominic and Loftys wedding. Everyone was in Albies enjoying a hilarious quiz designed to find out how much Dom and Lofty (in matching reindeer/stag outfits) know about each other. It turns out they dont know much at all. Lofty admitted to Dom that this worried him. He went off to spend the night at his nan Sheilaghs house as theyd arranged.
The next day Dominic had to work in the morning, and when Sheilagh rang the hospital to find out what to do with Loftys wedding suit, he realised Lofty hadnt been home. As the day wore on everyone was getting worried. Essie was ringing the police and hospitals, and Dominic eventually reported his fiancé missing. Then Lofty turned up, still in his reindeer outfit, having fallen asleep on a bus and ending up in the middle of nowhere with his phone and wallet missing. The poor lad had walked 18 miles, but a long walk will give you time to think, and what he thought was that they were rushing into marriage and he wasnt sure that they worked as a couple. This was hugely sad, with poor Dominic left sobbing on Essies shoulder and our dreams of a Dofty wedding in tatters.
At least one relationship is going well. At the pub quiz, we discovered that Zav has really been paying attention to Donna and knows practically everything about her. Bless.

And Darwins very own snarly faced goth queen, Frieda Petrenko, found herself with a new friend after rescuing a dog that had been locked in a parked car overnight. His owner was a patient, whod needed emergency surgery after he collapsed at the hospital pharmacy. As he faced a long stay in hospital there was nobody to look after the dog and eventually Frieda was persuaded that she really needed a furry friend in her life. The fact that he was a somewhat badly-behaved dog who trashed Jacs office probably only added to his appeal.
