Holby City review with spoilers: Serena is tempted

Serena has a fan (Picture: BBC)

It was the moment Berena fans had dreaded. After resisting for several weeks, Serena Campbell finally gave in and kissed newish F1 Dr Leah Faulkner. It was a passionate kiss but a fairly brief one and was followed by awkwardness, Leah stomping off and Serena guiltily sending a brief email to Bernie in Nairobi.

This all followed a stressful day in which a patients severed fingers went missing and Leah had to delve through bags of clinical waste to try to find them, and Serena reattached the severed fingers, dealt with other nasty emergencies, missed Bernie and coped with hot flushes. Plus there was a CQC inspector roaming the ward. This was Tara Doyle (Erin Shanagher), whod previously run her inspectorly eye over the ED in Casualty. No wonder Serena was distracted by an attractive F1 whod gone to the trouble of finding her a hand-held fan (for the hot flushes).

Dr Meena Chowdhury, whos been through a lot recently what with running Roxanna over and being central to the unmasking of Professor Gaskell, had a chat with Tara Doyle. We saw this chat out of sequence with the rest of the episode, as Meena talked about events we hadnt yet seen, in which she felt unsupported by Serena. We also saw Meena talking to her old mate Nicky about how she was sad that they used to be such good mates but they werent any more. Id completely forgotten that these two have been sharing a flat all the while, so it seems to be quite a feat of sulking that they havent made friends before now.

Anyway, the upshot of it all is that Meena has decided to leave. Too many junior doctors are falling by the wayside, she said. Then in 10 or 20 years, where will we be? Good point well made, but its a shame that particular junior doctor has fallen by the wayside because I enjoyed her character.

Meanwhile her friend Nicky had set her heart (excuse the pun) on a future as a CT surgeon. To secure a more permanent position on Darwin would mean impressing Ms Naylor, but Mo reminded Nicky that Jac was technically a patient and so Nicky should be trying to impress Mo instead. Of course Jac hadnt got the memo about that and couldnt resist chipping in about Nicky and her patient. Jac told Nicky she didnt think she was the CT type, but Mo (who is so different to Jac that she really proves that theres more than one CT type) told her not to be a quitter.

Jac seemed to be making good progress – shes on her feet again and was due to be discharged – but she didnt want to leave Darwin. This wasnt just so she could keep a beady eye on her ward, she finally admitted to Mo. It was because she was scared that something would go wrong when she was at home and shed collapse or die on Emma. After all that shes been through, its hardly surprising that shed want to stay as close as possible to a crack team of doctors and all the equipment the NHS can buy.

Henrik Hanssen was dealing with his own traumas on Keller. Essie offered him a listening ear, and Tara Doyle was quite keen for him to open up, but as usual he was keeping his feeling in tight check and pretending that he was ok. He told Tara that he blamed himself for bringing Gaskell, and Fredrik before him, to the hospital and said he was prepared to resign if necessary.

His patient was a woman with early onset Alzheimers, and his kindness and sensitivity in the way he approached her reminded us what Holby would be missing if he did resign. Tara suggested that Holby needed an experienced person at the helm, and we left Hanssen and Serena gazing at the CEOs chair. I dont envy anyone that poisoned chalice, Serena said. Do you? Does he? Will he take up his rightful position once again? And are Abigail Tates slippers still under the desk?

And in other news, Zav and Donna seem to be getting on very well indeed.
