Still sending those pesky auto registration renewals in via snail mail?
Just be aware, your tags might expire before the Department of Motor Vehicles even gets around to opening your envelope and fetching your check.
A woman from Tustin says she sent her renewal form to the DMV on April 11 by U.S. Postal Service — as about 25% of the public does. She figured shed have her new registration by May, when it expires. But the check still hasnt cleared. Technically, shes a scofflaw.
She has called the DMV several times, and clerks say theyre four or so weeks behind on opening the mail. They cant even say if theyve received her check.
A ticket for expired tags could set a motorist back $25. But with fees and penalties, it could go as high as $225.
“We asked what happens if a policeman asks to see it?” the reader said by email. “She advised they should be aware that the problem exists. Not a very good situation.”
DMV spokesman Marty Greenstein said the vast majority of all vehicle registration renewals are handled quickly, and customers can expect to get their new stickers within three to four weeks. But not always.
“For a variety of reasons, some transactions require special processing by hand, which can extend the wait to receive the stickers beyond the normal time period,” Greenstein said by email. “About a quarter of all renewals are done by mail, which does have a slower processing time than renewals conducted online or through other methods.”
The most convenient of those other methods? The DMV Now self-service terminal, which can be found throughout the state, including in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. These kiosks print registration cards and stickers on the spot and also can handle other issues, such as providing proof of insurance.
