This upcoming Netflix series—British dramedy The End of the F*ing World—seems like a classic coming of age story. Boy meets girl. Girl likes boy. Boy secretly fakes reciprocation because he actually wants to murder girl. Tale as old as time, you know?
The streaming platform dropped the surprise trailer for the series, which is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Charles S. Forsman, on Monday. Its story revolves around James (Alex Lawther, who you might remember from the excellent Black Mirror episode “Shut Up and Dance”), a teen psychopath who really wants to murder someone. His interest is especially piqued when he meets Alyssa (Jessica Barden, The Lobster), a sardonic, acid-tongued classmate. When Alyssa starts flirting with him, James seizes the moment, pretending to like her back, all while secretly plotting her demise. They soon embark on an ill-advised road trip together—after James punches Alyssa’s dad in the face and steals his car, of course. As their journey continues, James starts to develop feelings—gasp!—for Alyssa, which shoves a truly unfortunate wrench in his murder plans.
The foul-mouthed series promises to be a funny, bloody thrill, potentially filling the gaps left by hit shows on hiatus like the absurdist American Vandal and the grim 13 Reasons Why. The latter was a particularly massive hit for Netflix, resonating with young viewers and, later, stirring up a debate for its controversial approach to depicting suicide. That hasn’t stopped the show’s momentum, however; Netflix is giving it a second season, and leading actress Katherine Langford picked up a Golden Globe nomination as well. The End of the Fing World, with its grim plot and farcical sense of humor, could be the perfect show to fill up the13 Reasons Why*-shaped hole in teen hearts right about now. It premieres Jan. 5.
