If there is one criticism of the James Bond series it is that 007 as a character doesnt quite work in this #MeToo era where audiences dont want to see female characters with no purpose other than eye candy for a womanising spy.
But a new fan theory could not only offer a gateway to the oft-requested first female Bond – but could also allow for the continuation of a male Bond to not be, well, such a pig – as it argues that 007 may not be the only codename the spy uses, and that the name James Bond itself is also a codename.
It would mean that Sean Connerys Bond is in fact a completely different person to Timothy Daltons, Pierce Brosnans and Daniel Craigs.
The theory not only offers explanation for the face swapping that takes place as new actors take over (Doctor Who worked that one out in the 70s with regeneration) but it is also offers a solid reason for one of the biggest issues with James Bond – the fact that he constantly decides to reveal his name to super villains.

What a rookie error, if indeed it is his real name.
Of course Craigs Bond, first seen on screens in 2006s Casino Royale, in many ways did kickstart the series by rebooting Bond as a spy new to the game and in many respects ignoring previous canon, and his decision to make Bond 25 his final film could conceivably allow for a female Bond to take over the mantle.
However there are some major flaws in the theory – namely that how likely is it that six different men all enjoy a martini, shaken not stirred?
And if George Lazenbys Bond was married to Teresa but not Roger Moores, why was he seen laying flowers at her grave in For Your Eyes Only? (One argument here could be that Moores Bond was laying flowers to pay tribute to his colleagues wife.)

The biggest flaw is that this theory also relies on the notion that the name of many of Bonds associates – from Moneypenny to M and Blofeld – are also aliases, as these are characters whose faces have also changed over the years.
Regardless of if the theory is one Barbara Broccoli and co pick up on for future films, its clear that at some point the series has to move forward, whether thats with a martini-drinking Bond or not.
