If there were ever a moment to be silent as a church mouse, its at a royal wedding. Unfortunately, as James Corden discovered over the weekend, this is much easier said than done when one has bad allergies.
The Late Late Show host and his wife made the invite list for Prince Harry and Meghan Markles royal wedding Saturday, joining a star-studded guest list that also included Oprah Winfrey, Serena Williams, and, of course, the cast of Suits. “It was Britain at its finest,” Corden recalled. “It was a picture perfect day. Windsor castle, 600 guests, 30,000 flowers—or as Elton John calls it, a Thursday.”
Some might have noticed, however, that in certain photos, Corden did not look amused. On Mondays Late Late Show, the comedian offered a joke in his defense: “What face do you make whilst youre watching a cellist in a church?” Then he launched into a more compelling excuse.
“The worst part of the ceremony for me was, there were flowers everywhere,” Corden said. “The most beautiful flowers youve ever seen. And I get quite bad allergies if Im in such close proximity to flowers—and so for a lot of the ceremony, I just needed to sneeze.” For the record, that includes the moment when the archbishop asked if anybody in the room knew any reason the two should not be wed. At that moment, Corden said, he had to do “one of those internal sneezes,” scrunching up his faces and letting out the quietest squeak of a sneeze. Note to self: when and if invited to a royal wedding, always stock up on antihistamines.
Allergies aside, Corden said the wedding was as beautiful as it seemed from afar. “Ive known Prince Harry about seven years now, and it was wonderful,” Corden said. “It was one of the most beautiful ceremonies Ive ever been to. . . It was happy, and it was joyous, it was uplifting. . . Elton was there; he performed some songs in the afternoon. George Clooney was there, so congratulations, Meghan and Harry, on your new Nespresso machine.”
Corden wasnt the only one who enjoyed the royal nuptials. The vast majority of A-list guests reportedly stayed until the end of the reception, where there were drinking games, including beer pong. And across the Atlantic, Americans tuned in in droves, waking up at roughly 6 A.M. Eastern time to catch the ceremony live on television.
“Imagine having such a beautiful ceremony that the entire planet actually wants to watch your wedding video,” Corden said, before touching on the very thing that so many people loved about the occasion: “It was the most wonderful and inclusive service. I was proud to be British on that day. It was a modern, forward-thinking couple having the exact ceremony that they wanted. And they brought Britain and the world together for a happy occasion. I was so pleased to be there.” Were so happy for everyone involved—and not at all jealous.
