Josh McDaniels has opted to not coach the Indianapolis Colts, despite the fact an official announcement was made earlier Tuesday.
McDaniels will instead remain the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted Tuesday night, “Stunner: Patriots’ OC Josh McDaniels has decided NOT to accept Colts’ HC job and will remain with New England, sources told ESPN…In the past 48 hours, Patriots owner Robert Kraft began talking with Josh McDaniels and ultimately wound up sweetening his contract, helping to entice him to remain in New England, per sources. Bill Belichick has his OC back.”

Talk about a stunning twist. I’m not sure we’ve ever seen anything like this before. The Colts announced the decision earlier today, and said terms had been agreed to with McDaniels to become their next head coach.

I don’t know what Patriots owner Bob Kraft had to offer McDaniels in order to stay, but I’d imagine it was something huge. The only thing worth staying as an OC instead of a head NFL coach was if you thought you would take over when Belichick retires. There’s nothing else that could justify this decision.
