Christopher Plummer, who recently replaced Kevin Spacey in Ridley Scott’s instense biopic All The Money In The World, has revealed that, despite taking over Spacey’s role, the disgraced actor will still appear in the finished film.
Despite all of Spacey’s work as billionaire oil tycoon J Paul Getty being re-shot by 88-year-old Plummer, he still appears in one brief scene during the movie, which was released in UK cinemas 5 January 2018.
Plummer told Radio 4: ‘All my scenes were redone, Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg (his co-stars) came back to do the whole thing over again, they changed their performances.
‘Nothing of Kevin really remains; I think there was one shot from his back that had to be used for a seamless move by the camera.’
The actor replaced Spacey after the 58-year-old actor was accused of sexual misconduct by several men.
Following the allegations, Ridley Scott made the decision to completely reshoot all of Spacey’s scenes using Plummer, who was reportedly the original choice for the role of J Paul Getty in the film.
The director previously said of the switch: ‘I was finished with the film and was in Abbey Road finalising the music. Someone was like: Guess what? And that’s where it began.
‘I sat and thought about it and realised, we cannot. You can’t tolerate any kind of behavior like that. And it will affect the film.
‘We cannot let one person’s action affect the good work of all these other people. It’s that simple.’
This meant that co-stars Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg also had to return to reshoot all scenes which had formerly features Spacey.
But Williams, who stars as Gail Harris in the film, said that she was proud to be part of the newly reshot film.
The actress said: ‘When this idea was hatched, I immediately started to feel better. This doesn’t do anything to ease the suffering of people who were all too personally affected by Kevin Spacey, but it is our little act of trying to right a wrong.
‘And it sends a message to predators — you can’t get away with this anymore. Something will be done.’
Plummer also added that while he didn’t hesitate to take on the role, he deliberately chose to avoid watching any of Spacey’s scenes.
‘I didn’t follow in his footsteps at all, I didn’t want to see his performance, as I wouldn’t want to see any other actor I would replace, because you don’t want to be influenced by anything he did. It’s your take and I did it absolutely as it had been written.’
