Margot Robbie has finally opened up on why she decided to produce the new Oscar nominated film I, Tonya.
The 25-year-old actress said she wasn’t prepared to wait ’10 years for someone to happen to offer me a role like this.’
Speaking to the Digital Spy, Margot explained: ‘I don’t think anyone would have given me this role unless I had gone after it.’
Taking on the role of producer and leading actress, the Australian star plays the character of real-life figure skater Tonya Harding who became the first American Woman to perform a triple axel during a competition.
Her story of success takes a dark turn however when Tonya’s legacy and reputation is tarnished by her ex-husband’s plans to injure a fellow Olympic hopeful.
Teaming up with her husband Tom Ackerley to make the dark comic biopic under their own company LuckyChap Entertainment, Margot explained that she never expected to make any major money from the film.
At the UK premiere of the movie she said: ‘It was a difficult script to make and a lot of challenges – you’re never going to get a ton of money from something so unconventional.
‘And it’s a period script, spanning four decades, and it was a huge undertaking to produce this but amazing, taking a gamble like this which has paid off.’
The pressure to play such a well-documented character was definitely felt by Margot, who was nominated by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
But the Hollywood star, who gained an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for the role, thinks the film may help to change people’s perceptions and ‘challenge their opinions and views’ of the infamous figure skater amidst the historically negative headlines that shadowed her career.
I,Tonya is due out in Cinemas on February 16.
