Agnes Varda, the oldest Oscar nominee of all time, has no time for trivial events such as the 2018 Oscars nominee luncheon – and so instead she sent along several cardboard cut outs of herself.
The annual luncheon sees all the nominees gather in one place before the ceremony for a class photo, with the likes of Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg, Greta Gerwig, Jordan Peele, and Mary J. Blige all getting on their glad rags and preparing their best pose.
But for Agnes, a cut out was the best she could offer – although Meryl and Steven were loving the addition to the photo (and probably wondering why they hadn’t thought of doing the same thing) with Steven even nabbing a quick picture of him and ‘Agnes’.
Agnes, 89, received an Oscar nomination for best documentary for Faces Places, a French documentary she co-directed with pseudonymous French Street artist JR.
JR, 34, was at the event, and was given the honourable task of making sure ‘Agnes’ was where she needed to be at all times. Faces Places chronicles a road trip taken by JR and Agnes, meeting ordinary people and telling their stories of small town life.
Elsewhere at the event, insiders captured candid moments, such as when Steven Spielberg took a selfie with Best Director nominees Greta Gerwig and Guillermo del Toro.
Meryl Streep also reportedly spent time with newcomer Timothee Chalamet, introducing him to people ‘like she was his mom’.
