Claudia Llosa, director of Oscar-nominated drama The Milk Of Sorrow (La Teta Asustada) will be the first Peruvian director of a Netflix film. Spanish-language drama Distancia de Rescate, based on the novel Fever Dream by Argentine author Samanta Schweblin, is due to begin production in Chile in early 2019 from a script co-written by Llosa and Schweblin.
The film will be produced by Rain Man and Breaking Bad producer Mark Johnson and Tom Williams for Johnsons Gran Via Productions, working in conjunction with Juan and Pablo Larrains Fabula Productions of Santiago, winner of the foreign-language Oscar for A Fantastic Woman.
Set in a sleepy, rural community in Argentina, the film will tell the haunting story of broken souls, toxins, looming environmental and spiritual catastrophes, and the ties that bind a parent to a child.
“The film will portray the love and fear surrounding motherhood through a complex feminine prism,” said Aloft director Claudia Llosa. “I am very happy to return to film in South America, and Im very grateful to Netflix for having been enthusiastic about this project from the beginning. I feel like I could not have gotten better travel companions for this project, one that speaks of a local problem that touches the whole world.”
“We are excited to partner with Claudia Llosa, Mark Johnson and Fabula Productions,” said Ian Bricke, Co-Head of the independent film team at Netflix. “They are incredible storytellers, and Distancia de Rescate is a story we believe will resonate with our global audience. This is a truly international partnership featuring an Argentine story, filmed in Chile, from a Peruvian director partnering with an American production company; its a great example of our ongoing aim to provide storytellers from around the world with a platform to reach movie lovers everywhere.”
