Nick Kyrgios tumbled out of the US Open on Saturday night, as Andrey Rublevs summer of brilliance continued.

The 28th seed was beaten in straight sets by the 21-year-old Russian – who will go on to face Matteo Berrettini – but there was no major explosion as there often is in a Kyrgios defeat.

There were the odd complaints about floodlights impairing vision and he did, rather humorously, call a line judge a whistleblower for telling umpire Eva Asderaki hed heard an audible obscenity, but unlike on other occasions this summer it didnt linger on as he went about his business.

How much Kyrgios will play for the rest of the year remains to be seen.

The Aussie bad boy will head to the Laver Cup in Geneva next but is facing a suspension from the ATP Tour after a string of offences this summer and he admitted he could perhaps be in need of a reboot beyond his involvement in doubles.

I guess Ive been on the road five and a half months now. Its not easy, Kyrgios said.

Would I welcome it [the suspension]? I dont know if I look at it like that, he added with a smile.

I dont know. I have no say in it. I guess its out of my control.

I havent [spoken to anyone], to be honest. I mean, no, I havent. I havent heard anything about it.

Asked what he thought they should do, he replied: I dont know, man. What do you think they should do? Deep down you might have an answer.

Yeah, I guess Im a pretty boring player. I dont bring much to the sport, so…

Rublev – who also dispatched Stefanos Tsitsipas at this event – has once again proven himself to be a serious slugger on the American hard courts and looks well placed to go one better than his previous best quarter-final effort, with his section of the draw wide open with the biggest names all out.

The Russian beat Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka in Cincinnati ahead of the final Grand Slam of the year and is perhaps the biggest threat to Rafael Nadal in the bottom half of the draw.
