The Oscar nominees for the 2018 Academy Awards were revealed just over one month ago, leaving the lucky chosen few with a nail-biting wait for the pièce de résistance of awards season.

That means the lucky chosen few have had over a month to prepare their winners’ speeches – and practice walking in their heels / long dresses / shiny shoes. Nobody wants to do a Jennifer Lawrence after all, do they?

Come Sunday night, the nominees will be gathered in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, waiting to see if they have been chosen by the Oscars board as the cream of the 2017 film crop.

While the Baftas, the Sags and the Golden Globes might pave the way for the Oscars, the competition is always wide open, with the Oscars board having a habit for going against the grain and picking unexpected winners.

Without further ado, here are the actors, actresses, directors, cast and crew who will need to practice their winning (or losing) faces for this weekend…

Here, Metro.co.uk Film Writer Rebecca Lewisweighs in on this year’s nominees

‘Guillermo del Toro’s gorgeous The Shape Of Water is leading the pack for the 2018 Academy Awards with 13 nominations – but it is the appearance of Lady Bird and Get Out that has many film fans over the moon.

Both Get Out and Lady Bird had been considered critics choice front runners but in recent weeks there was concern over the likelihood that they may make an appearance in categories such as acting and directing – especially after both the Golden Globes and Baftas snubbed directors Jordan Peele for Get Out and Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird.

On Tuesday however both found themselves in the running for Best Director – while it seems fears that we may have another #OscarsSoWhite ceremony in 2018 were put to bed.

Nominations were given to British actor Daniel Kaluuya, who is up for his first ever Oscar for Best Actor, along with Mary J. Blige, Octavia Spencer, and Denzel Washington; below the line nominations were also incredibly diverse with Dee Rees, Virgil Williams and Peele in Screenplay categories and Rachel Morrison in cinematography – making her the first female ever nominated.

Saoirise Ronan has once again found herself up for Best Actress for her performance as the titular Lady Bird but she will face stiff competition from Frances McDormand, who has been sweeping awards ceremonies in recent weeks for her work in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Christopher Nolan’s technical masterpiece Dunkirk has eight nominations while Three Billboards received seven.

There were four acting nominations for British stars – Kaluuya, Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour, Daniel Day-Lewis for Phantom Thread, and Sally Hawkins for The Shape Of Water.

Elsewhere the Netflix drama Mudbound made a surprise appearance – there is still some concern – and snobbery – over films that don’t get wide release in cinemas – with Blige waking up on Tuesday morning with a Best Supporting Actress nod, as well as Best Adapted Screenplay nod for Williams and Rees.

And Washington’s name also may have surprised many, with the two-time Oscar winner picking up a Best Actor nod for his work in Roman J. Israel Esq, which had come and gone in the eyes of many.

Steven Spielberg’s The Post only picked up two nods (Picture: eOne)

Other notable surprises included a lack of support for Steven Spielberg with his timely movie The Post only picking up two nominations, for Meryl Streep in Best Actress, and Best Picture, and the decision by Academy members to limit the Best Picture race to nine films despite having the ability to welcome ten

Since 2011 the category has been open to a maximum of 10 films, after then-AMPAS president Sid Ganis rightly admitted that many fantastic movies ‘often show up in the other Oscar categories but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize’.

This offers more films the chance to shine and be discussed in awards contention, which arguably gives that film more name recognition and leads to more bums on cinema seats, but the maximum ever nominated has always been nine.
