Robert Redford has confirmed that he will retire from acting after the release of his next film.
Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and [Ill] move towards retirement after this cause Ive been doing it since I was 21, says the 81-year-old actor.
I thought, “Well, thats enough.” And why not go out with something thats very upbeat and positive?
Redfords last film will be The Old Man And The Gun, a David Lowery film in which Redford will play Forrest Tucker, the real-life career criminal in love with his self-appointed job of robbing banks and breaking out of prison.
To me, that was a wonderful character to play at this point in my life, the Oscar winner told EW.
The thing that really got me about him — which I hope the film shows — is he robbed 17 banks and he got caught 17 times and went to prison 17 times. But he also escaped 17 times. So it made me wonder: I wonder if he was not averse to getting caught so he that could enjoy the real thrill of his life, which is to escape?
Redford began acting at the age of 21 and has been nominated for an Oscar for acting once, director once and best picture once; he won in 1980 for best director for Ordinary People, which also won best picture.

In 2001 he won a Lifetime Achievement Award.
He won a Bafta in 1969 for Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid.
Wuth the proceeds from that film he bought an entire ski area on the east side of Mount Timpanogos northeast of Provo, Utah, called Timp Haven, which was renamed Sundance, and he began the now famous Sundance Film Festival.
The first festival in 1978 featured Deliverance, A Streetcar Named Desire, Midnight Cowboy, Mean Streets, and The Sweet Smell of Success.
