Ryan Murphy, TV’s most prolific maestro, is once again joining forces with Netflix. Just a few months after picking up Murphy’s Nurse Ratched series, the streaming platform has nabbed a show from Murphy and frequent collaborators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan: an hour-long comedy called The Politician. Netflix reportedly grabbed the show with a two-season, straight-to-series order, according to Deadline. Though the series is set to star Tony winner Ben Platt, Deadline adds that two high-profile stars are also in negotiations to join the cast: Barbra Streisand and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Of course, this won’t be Paltrow’s first time joining the Murphy circus. She previously made a few guest appearances on his and Falchuk’s long-running musical series, Glee—an arc that began her romance with Falchuk, to whom she’s now engaged. However, this series would mark Streisand’s first time in a Murphy joint. Though television has grown more and more prestigious as it’s roped in huge stars, from Meryl Streep to . . . Meryl Streep, Babs has largely avoided the TV renaissance. In fact, she hasn’t acted in anything since the 2012 comedy The Guilt Trip—unless you count this charitable bit of voice acting she did for Modern Family in 2016.
Deadline also reports that Streisand might direct a few episodes of the series. Though the iconic singer has directed many of her concert specials in recent years, the gig would be her first time directing a work of fiction since the 1996 romantic comedy The Mirror Has Two Faces. Finally, she’ll give us something to watch after streaming Barbra: The Music…The Mem’ries…The Magic! for the hundredth time!
The Politician reportedly revolves around Platt’s character, Payton, a Santa Barbara-based rich kid with political dreams. As you might have anticipated, Platt—a Broadway star who won his first Tony last year—will reportedly have several musical numbers in the series, because nobody wants to waste that beautiful, Beyoncé-approved voice.
Further details of the upcoming series are still under wraps for now, though Murphy is reportedly set to direct the first episode—as he always does, mostly in order to personally make you feel lazier about your job performance. In the meantime, he’ll focus his attention on a slew of upcoming projects like the 80s-centric Pose,Ratched,American Crime Story seasons about Hurricane Katrina and Monica Lewinsky,Feud Season 2 about Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and the next season of American Horror Story, not to mention his currently ongoing shows like 9-1-1 and American Crime Story: Versace.
