california

June is big month for weddings, and for legislation about same-sex marriage. On June 16, 2008, clerks in several California counties began issuing marriage licenses to thousands of same-sex couples. That decision was fought in the courts for five years. In 2013 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the states right to allow same-sex marriage. Two years later, the Supreme Court ruled that states cannot prevent same-sex couples from marrying.

WHERE COUPLES LIVE

Marriage license information is maintained at the county level, making it difficult to calculate the numbers of licenses issued. Using information from tax and Social Security records, the Treasury Department estimated that In 2014, about 183,280 same-sex couples were married in the United States, roughly one-third of 1 percent of all marriages that year.
