Sonic The Hedgehogs release date has been delayed until February next year, after announcing plans to redesign the main character.

Director Jeff Fowler announced on Twitter the upcoming video game movie adaptation will now release 14 February, 2020, three months after its original US release on 7 November, 2019.

Posting on Twitter, Fowler wrote: Taking a little more time to make Sonic just right. #nofxartistswereharmedinthemakingofthismovie.

The films first trailer received widespread criticism over Sonics CGI design, with many picking fault with his teeth, freakishly long fingers and weirdly slender physique.

Following the criticism, Fowler vowed Sonics design would be changed for the film, stating: The message is loud and clear.

You arent happy with the design & you want changes. Its going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… #sonicmovie #gottafixfast.

Sonic is voiced by Ben Schwartz in the movie, while Jim Carrey plays his nemesis Dr Robotnik, with a supporting cast including James Marsden, Neal McDonough, Adam Pally and Natasha Rothwell.

The delay is not surprising considering the short window they gave themselves to redesign Sonic, with this perhaps a positive sign we could see some significant improvements.

Sonic The Hedgehogs original UK release date was a month later than the US on 26 December, 2019, with it unclear whether the new February release date is the same internationally.
