Steven Spielberg is known for his use of expansive and gorgeous visuals so its no wonder that when it came to shooting his most recent action adventure Ready Player One, he was more keen on the real world action than the virtual reality motion capture.

I was so happy when I got into the real world with a real movie crew and sound crew and camera crew, says Steven in this exclusive behind the scenes clip from the film.

Filming with film was like candy for your eyes, we were mesmerized, said Olivia Cooke of getting to film in the real world as opposed to the volume where they shot the VR scenes.

Its just bright and clinical on the other set, that suddenly it was so luxurious and velvety and I had an appreciation for colours that I was now seeing for the first time! she added.

Based on Clines 2001 novel Ready Player One is set in a dystopian future where mankind lives most of its reality in a virtual reality called The OASIS, created by major games nerd James Halliday (Mark Rylance) and which is full – like, seriously full – of 80s pop culture references and phenomena.

After Hallidays death its revealed that he hid within the game three challenges which lead to three keys and which in turn will make the ultimate winner the sole owner and so, daily, citizens enter The OASIS to win the game, including Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) also known as Parzival, and the Sixers, so called because they are hired by evil megacorp IOI, and given no avatar identity but simply numbers as they attempt to also win the game for the head honcho (Ben Mendelhson).

Ready Player One arrives on Digital Download on 23 July and to 4K, Blu-Ray™ 3D, Blu-Ray™ and DVD on 6 August.
