You may have heard of a little program called Stranger Things. It had new episodes last week. People tweeted about it. Songs were sung, and so on. And it really may have been viewed 40.7 million times, as supported by a Nielsen ratings survey—though what that actually means for now Netflix measures success is anyones guess.
“Stranger Things 3 is breaking Netflix records,” the company exuberantly tweeted on Monday, days after the shows July 4 premiere. “40.7 million household accounts have been watching the show since its July 4 global launch — more than any other film or series in its first four days. And 18.2 million have already finished the entire season.”
40.7 million is a lot! It's impossible to know what that means in relation to Netflixs overall accounts, how many actual people were watching each account, or how many subscribers will pick up the series in their own time, but hooray! Numbers!
The Nielsen rating company backed that up as best they could on Thursday, claiming an average of 12.8 million viewers watched at least one minute over the shows first four days of release—notable as a 21 percent increase from Stranger Things 2 in October 2017. Granted, Nielsen can only measure U.S. viewership on actual TV sets (no tablet, computer or phone viewing for you), but they still had solid numbers to toss around.
Theres 19.17 million viewers for Season 3 premiere “Suzie, Do You Copy,” and over 10 million for six of the eight episodes. At least 824,000 subscribers finished the entirety of Season 3 in its first day, apparently undeterred by any fireworks or neighborhood barbecues. Of course, Netflix generally dismisses any third-party measurements of its notoriously-private viewership data, but Nielsen did label Stranger Things 3 “the most watched Netflix original series weve ever analyzed.”
Heres the full Nielsen analysis, per The Hollywood Reporter.
