Dominic Toretto might live his life a quarter-mile at a time, but even for him, this ones got to be a pretty big surprise: the Fast and Furious franchise will apparently continue in animated Netflix series form.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has given the project—which, it bears repeating, is an animated adaptation of Vin Diesels action/street-racing franchise—a straight-to-series order as part of a newly expanded deal that gives Netflix first-look rights to turn Universal film properties into DreamWorks Animation adaptations. (It was this deal, T.H.R. notes, that previously brought Guillermo del TorosTrollhunters, among other series, to Netflix.) Vin Diesel and his fellow Fast film producers Neal Moritz and Chris Morgan will executive produce the Netflix series. And if youre wondering what the hell a Fast & Furious Netflix cartoon would even look like, we already have some answers.
The Fast and the Furious animated series will focus on Dom Torettos cousin Tony, because one cant expect Vin Diesel to do everything himself. Thankfully for Fast fans, the same Toretto blood runs through Tonys veins, which would make him about 94 percent gasoline and 6 percent . . . some other liquid that goes into cars. But not brake fluid, because Tony definitely prefers the gas pedal. Tony and his friends, T.H.R. reports, get “recruited by a government agency to infiltrate an elite racing league serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization bent on world domination.”
The live-action Fast franchise is already a veritable universe all its own, with eight feature films down and two more coming in 2020 and 2021. In 2016, it seemed there was a rift at the center of this happy family when Dwayne Johnson, who has played Luke Hobbs since Fast Five, started the “candy-ass” beef heard round the world. And then there was Tyrese Gibson, who started beefing with Johnson over saying anything to begin with. Earlier this month, Johnson also called out cast members who complained about his upcoming spin-off with fellow Fast player Jason Statham,Hobbs and Shaw. If this latest news shows us anything, however, its that this franchise was built to withstand just about anything—and that its gravitational pull will likely keep its cast, viewers, and streaming giants alike coming back for more.
