Tom Holland has had one heck of a year since winning the 2017 EE Bafta Rising Star award, so it was a good job he was on hand on Tuesday evening to let this year’s nominees in on what’s in store.
Two of this year’s nominees, Florence Pugh and Josh O’Connor, were at the event although Timothee Chalamet, Tessa Thompson, and Daniel Kaluuya were all there in spirit.
Quite literally, as it turned out, as the drinks on offer included the Call Me Chalamet, Tessa’s Tipple, Daniel’s Kicking Kaluuya, Cocktail O’Connor and Pugh’s Punch.
Bafta Rising Star jury member Edith Bowman was also there – and received a big thank you kiss from Josh and Florence.
The two spent much of the night together chinwagging, with Josh overheard at one point admitting that the non-stop parties and schmoozing were getting to him and he was ready for a night in at some point soon.
Understandable.
Others included British up and comer Harrison Osterfield, and musicians Tom Grennen, M.O, The Saturday’s – Frankie Bridge, Vanessa White, and Rochelle Humes – Paloma Faith, and Professor Green.
Maya Jama – fresh back from her trip to Hawaii and a pit stop in Minneapolis to watch the 2018 Super Bowl – spun the desks with a helping hand from AJ Odudu.
Each year’s nominees have been picked for showing ‘truly outstanding talent on the big screen in the past year and [capturing] the attention of both the public and the film industry alike’.
The five nominated in 2018 however have had an equal level of fame in the past 12 months, even if some do a have a bigger body of work behind them.
Being named as a Rising Star is ‘amazing encouragement from film fans in the UK to keep doing what you are doing and giving these incredible performances,’ said former winner Juno Temple to Metro.co.uk at the launch of the nominees on 4 January.
‘It is so cool that it is the only award voted for by the public.’
The EE Rising Star Award is the only award voted for by the British Public. Voting is now open at ee.co.uk/BAFTA. The winner will be announced on 18 February 2018 at the EE British Academy Film Awards ceremony.
