The Christmas number one race is on and it looks set to be won by Ava Max, LadBaby or Ariana Grande.

There are mere hours to wait, as the official UK chart will be announced at 4.45pm.

But while we wait for the festive news, it seems a good time to remind ourselves of what the Christmas number one was in 2017.

Last years festive chart-topper was Ed Sheeran with his single Perfect.

As if this lad hadnt already had the best year ever – having worked with Beyonce and Eminem to name just two of his 2017 highlights, oh and popping up in Game Of Thrones – he then finished it off by nabbing the coveted top spot.

It was a tense battle, with Ed fighting with Eminem and his single River and Wham!s Last Christmas, following George Michaels death the previous year on Christmas Day.

Thank you very much for making Perfect Christmas Number 1, he said at the time. This is an actual dream come true and Im very proud and happy. Thank you so much and have a very Merry Christmas, happy holidays and a Happy New Year.

Ed received 85,000 combined sales, split across 45,000 downloads and six million streams.

Eminem ended up at number two, with Wham! just behind at number three. Positions four and five were taken by Mariah Careys All I Want For Christmas and Rita Oras Anywhere respectively.

Christmas number ones dont tend to be as festive as once upon a time, with the top spot previously reserved for the likes of Stay Another Day, Mistletoe and Wine and Merry Christmas Everyone.

But now the number one could go to a track that doesnt even have a piece of tinsel or a fake snow machine in its music video.

The classic example of this is, of course, when Rage Against The Machine landed the Christmas Number One in 2009 with rock track Killing In The Name Of.

It was the result of a campaign of Rage fans to keep The X Factor from nabbing it for the fifth year in a row. And it worked.
