Casey Affleck will not present the 2018 Best Actress winner of the Oscars after taking himself out of the running.
But why?
A rep for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences confirmed the actor notified Academy organisers in January that he would not be attending the event and therefore would be unable to present the award.
Although there was no explanation given, as Affleck won the best actor award last year for Manchester By The Sea, as is tradition he would have been the one to present the best actress award this year.
The actor’s withdrawal however came amid the re-emergence of sexual misconduct allegations against him on the set of the 2010 film I’m Still Here, which he directed. The accusations were made as part of lawsuits filed against Affleck by two women working on the film, director of photography Magdalena Gorka and producer Amanda White.
Affleck always denied the allegations and settled out of court with the two women; the sums paid to the women have never been disclosed and no one has spoken publicly about the settlement.
His win in 2017 may have come before the #MeToo movement but the allegations were given even more spotlight when actress Brie Larson noticeably refused to clap after handing him the award for Best Actor.
‘I think that whatever it was that I did onstage kind of spoke for itself,’ Brie later said.
‘I’ve said all that I need to say about the topic.’
Emma Stone is still expected to present the Best Actor award to this year’s winner after accepting the Best Actress gong in 2017 for La La Land.
