Get ready to have your hearts broken but lifted high with The Hate U Give, an incredibly timely film about race relations, Black Lives Matter, and a determined teenager who finds her voice – and will use it.

Starring Amandla Stenberg and Riverdales KJ Apa, The Hate U Give stars Stenberg as Starr Carter who finds herself constantly switching between two worlds: the poor, mostly black, neighbourhood where she lives and the rich, mostly white, prep school she attends.

But her uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a white police officer.

The movie is an adaptation of the Angie Thomas novel of the same name; KJ plays Starrs boyfriend, one of the privileged white kids attending the school whose world is also changed when he is awakened to how deeply race impacts their relationship.

KJs role came about following the dismissal of disgraced YouTuber Kian Lawley when racists comments he had made online emerged; given that the very film he was going to helm was based on a novel that deals with police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement, he was quickly ushered out of the door by all involved in February.

Fox authorised a little over a week of re-shoots which gave the cast and crew a tight deadline to film the key scenes all over again.

The Hate U Give is released in UK cinemas 2 November 2018.
