An incoming senior at a Long Island high school somehow became stricken at a "school function" and died in front of about 90 of her fellow students Monday night, authorities say.

The student, a 17-year-old girl, at Sachem North High School "tragically passed away last night," a statement on the district's website from Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Gray read. "We are currently not aware of the cause of death."

Police confirmed officers were called to Sachem East High School Monday night around 9:15 p.m. for a call of a "sick or injured person." They say it appears she had "a medical incident." No criminality is suspected.

Gray offered condolences to the individual's family and friends, and said support services would be available at both Sachem North and Sachem East Tuesday.
