Dozens of Department of Motor Vehicles offices across Southern California are now opening an hour earlier four days a week to help reduce long wait times.
Across the state, 69 offices are now open at 7 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays instead of at 8 a.m.
They will continue to open at 9 a.m. on Wednesdays.
Last summer, the DMV began offering the earlier hours at 16 offices. On Monday, an additional 53 offices, all with heavy foot traffic, began opening up earlier those four days as well.
In all, the DMV has about 170 general field offices in California.
Jaime Garza, a DMV spokesman, said appointments will not be offered during the extra hour.
“Opening one hour earlier has given the public another helpful option in which to conduct DMV business,” he said. “When combined with other strategic alternatives … we have reduced wait times significantly.”
In response to rampant criticism from the public and lawmakers over long lines, various changes have been made at DMV offices.
In August, the department announced it had hired more employees, expanded service to Saturdays and added more self-service terminals.
A major reason DMV lines have been long is the rush by many to make their drivers licenses or state ID a REAL ID, which takes additional time and documents.
