9 injured in Malibu crash involving multiple vehicles

MALIBU >> A multiple-vehicle crash Wednesday on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu injured nine people, including two who were trapped in the wreckage and freed with power tools.

Paramedics were sent to the 20100 block of Pacific Coast Highway near Big Rock Drive at 1:22 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Both trapped patients were freed and taken to a hospital by helicopter, a department inspector said.

The remaining seven were taken by ground ambulance, he said, adding that four sustained minor injuries.

As many as seven vehicles were involved, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Pacific Coast Highway was blocked in both directions while crews worked to clear the scene.

One southbound lane was reopened about 5:15 p.m. and all lanes in both directions were reopened by about 6:45 p.m., according to Caltrans.
