A La La Land–esque Musical Series Just Landed at Netflix

Netflix has once again rescued a show from the cutthroat world of broadcast TV, this time setting its safety net under the musical drama Mixtape. The series, created by Gossip Girl writer (and onetime Smash show-runner) Joshua Safran, was originally a buzzed-about Fox pilot. In the wake of that networks changing landscape, however, the show was ultimately passed over, leaving room for Netflix to order 10 episodes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The streaming platform also recently saved the canceled Fox drama Lucifer, which will move to the streaming platform for its fourth season.

The main cast of Mixtape, including Callie Hernandez, Jenna Dewan, Campbell Scott, and Madeleine Stowe, will remain in place. The role played by Raul Castillo will be re-cast, however, as the actor now has a recurring role on a different Netflix series, One Day at a Time. Mixtape has been described, per T.H.R., as “a romantic musical drama that looks at the love stories connecting a diverse, disparate group of people in contemporary Los Angeles through the music that lives inside their hearts and minds.”

Forgive us for simplifying, but—this sounds a lot like La La Land, right? Which is funny, because last year, it was reported that Damien Chazelle would follow up his Oscar-winning musical with an eight-episode Netflix musical drama titled The Eddy. Drama! We can just see it now, the rival casts of Mixtape and The Eddy finger-snapping past each other in the halls at Netflix HQ before breaking out into vindictive song. Or perhaps theyll all become best friends, and well get a big ol MixtapeThe Eddy crossover episode. Anythings possible.
