As a society, we need to provide a safe atmosphere for women: Kamal Haasan

Get Your Freaking Hands Off Me was launched by Kamal Haasan.

Music director Ghibran on Friday released a single titled “Get Your Freaking Hands Off Me”, which was launched by Kamal Haasan at Jeppiaar Engineering College.

“Music, according to me, is one of the most powerful platforms that can be used to bring people together to create awareness. Its important to spread the message that all of us have a collective responsibility. The discussions shouldnt end on Twitter and Facebook, but move forward,” Ghibran said.

He felt this is the perfect time to feel enabled and empowered in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

Thanking Kamal Haasan for being his inspiration, he added, “Sir might have entered into politics recently, but most of his films including Mahanati and Hey Ram has highlighted the violence against women, and questioned the system in practice.”

Speaking at the event, Kamal Haasan remembered the legendary poet Subramania Bharati and pointed out how Bharati not only believed in the concept of equality but also the superiority of women over men.

He said, “Even a forced handshake is wrong. As a society, we need to provide a safe atmosphere for women. And that lies in the hands of men. Our responsibility doesnt end with insisting a woman learn martial arts. Violence against women isnt simply a womens issue. It needs to be addressed by everyone.”

Throwing light on the #MeToo campaign, he elaborated, “Speaking out isnt about the timing, but finding a voice. No one should question a woman as to why she was silent all these years. Im glad theyre calling out their abusers. All we need to do is listen to them.”

The animated video created by Ghibran himself was screened at the college and received a thunderous applause from the students.

“I learnt animation and thought I could incorporate it here. The comics format is apt because it can grab the attention of kids. I want to promote non-film based music, and you can expect me to do similar singles in future. We all think music is confined to just films, but its not so. Having been associated with Kamal sir for quite some time now, I want to give back something to the society that has made me what I am today,” he said.

“Get Your Freaking Hands Off Me” has lyrics by Jaya Rathakrishnan (who has worked with Ghibran in Chennai to Singapore), and is sung by Chaitra Ambadipudi.
