The new Captain Marvel trailer dropped on Monday night, and mere hours, minutes, nay, seconds after we were all blessed with some Brie Larson goodness, the theories began.

The main one of which focused on Nick Furys eye.

Or, now, the lack of it. But in the films trailer it is firmly still in his noggin, which had punters immediately speculating as to how he lost it.

In a conversation with Steve Rogers/Captain America, he had said: The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye, and weve well and truly run with it.

A hardman like Nick Fury, leader of the flipping SHIELD, played by Samuel L Jackson, lost his eye to a cat? We couldnt quite believe it either, however when you dissect the fact Captain Marvel punches a granny in the film, you realise those fiendish aliens can be lurking anywhere.

And it takes a goose to trust a cat like that.

In the short scene towards the end of the trailer, Nick proved to fans he was a cat person when he was dissolved into an awwww-spouting bundle of pats as he gave Carol Danvers cat a good ol scritch.

However, its totally within the realm of the MCU to have his eye fall victim to the cat, which in the OG comics is called Chewie and is a Flerken.

Whats a fricken Flerken, you ask?

Well, you see, while in space (of course) Carol and Chewie encounter the Guardians of the Galaxy and Rocket Raccoon, who attempts to kill the cat because it is an aforementioned Flerken, which is dangerous alien who likes to take the form of pleasant housecats. Classic aliens.

The cat, with its Flerken capabilities, can apparently grow tentacles (and minuscule universes) when threatened. Which is kind of badass but at the same time, mildly terrifying.

So taking out an eye really is within its skills, should the MCU be following the comic book canon (even though theyve switched up the name).

And the internet is shooketh at the possibility this is how Nick succumbed to uni-vision, as they cooked up their own theories.

Thoughts on Captain Marvel trailer, it was ok looking they've kept the character traits from the comics which isn't bad, as with most MCU origin films it might be average but hoping for a surprise or two. 100% sure the cat is the one that takes Nick Fury 's eye #CaptainMarvel

Also, Nick Fury playing with the cat is the cutest thing ever. But then the Skrulls are making me so paranoid, its got me thinking- what if the cat is a Skrull and she scratches Furys eye out???

I swear if the cat Nick Fury is petting at the end of the new Captain Marvel trailer is the reason he lost his eye, that would be the funniest shit ever. Talk about Rian Johnson level subverting expectations.

Another put forth their theory: The cat in the Captain Marvel trailer will claw out Nick Furys eye and lead to his massive lack of trust in others and serious attitude in future movies as well as one “Motherfucker.” in Captain Marvel.

One fan likened it to Hot Tub Time Machine which may be the most tenuous link weve ever been on board ever: People are gonna be watching Nick Furys eye in Captain Marvel like they watched Crispin Glovers arm in Hot Tub Time Machine.

More: Marvel

Providing a greater insight into how Carol becomes one of the universes most powerful heroes, the action-packed two-minute montage gave us just enough of a taste of Avengers 4 – which will hopefully drop a trailer on Wednesday – in which Room star Brie will officially join the MCU for the first time.

Captain Marvel is in cinemas 8 March 2019.
