Nearly two years ago, Chance the Rapper released a mysterious, 19-second teaser for Slice, a movie written and directed by his frequent collaborator Austin Vesely. Precious few details were known about the project, beyond that it was secretly filmed in Chicago and A24 had already snapped it up—a harbinger of the movies potential prestige horror appeal. But now, at long last, the trailer has been unleashed, revealing Slice to be more of the cult circuit, Scary Movie varietal.
Slice, per an ominous narrator, revolves around “a ghost, a werewolf, and a pretty shitty pizza place” called Perfect Pizza, which happens to be built on a gateway to hell (naturally). The drama kicks off when a pizza delivery guy is murdered, likely killed by that rogue werewolf (played, presumably, by Chance?). One of the pizza place employees (Zazie Beetz) slips on her jacket and gets down to business, sneaking up on people and holding knives up to their necks. “Looks like Im going on a wolf hunt tonight,” she declares.
The cast is rounded out by Hannibal Buress, Paul Scheer—who plays the Perfect Pizza owner—and Stranger Things star Joe Keery, who looks like he just stepped off the set of the Netflix show and ambled on over to Slice, still decked out in retro Steve Harrington gear. While Chance is present throughout the trailer, riding around on a motorcycle, we only see him speak at the very end, after Beetzs character suddenly pops up behind him. “Whats wrong with you?” he whines.
Slice, which does not yet have a release date, has all the trappings of cult horror, complete with classic characters of the genre (ghosts! werewolves!) and endearingly garish special effects. Its also stocked with comedians, a strong sign that it might end up delivering more laughs than jump scares. Chance is a pretty adept comedian himself, recently hosting Saturday Night Live to warm reviews in an episode some considered a season best. Per the trailer, this movie looks like a far cry from the idiosyncratic horror A24 has been releasing, from the ominous prestige of The Witch to the thoroughly terrifying Hereditary. Which could be a nice deviation, provided Chance and co. can pull it off.
