A man was shot in the wrist after a fight at a mall in New Jersey, setting off chaos at the busy shopping center at the height of Black Friday.

Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage said two men got into a fight near the Tommy Hilfiger and Marshalls stores at The Mills at Jersey Gardens around 8 p.m. At some point, one man shot the other.

The man who was shot was taken to University Hospital in Newark and was not cooperating with authorities. The gunman has not been apprehended.

That set off a stampede in the mall — which had seen 25,000 shoppers over the course of the busy retail holiday. Social media photos showed people making a run for it through the mall's concourse; other videos showed shoppers and retail workers hunkered down inside stores.

Bollwage said no one appeared to have sustained serious injuries, but a few shoppers were treated for hyperventalation. A pregnant woman was also taken out of the mall by an EMT, but it wasn't clear if she was hurt.

The mall was evacuated after the gunfire, but an Elizabeth spokeswoman said noone else appeared to be in danger. The mall has since been closed for the evening.

Police response at the mall, along with shoppers leaving set off cascading traffic issues on the Garden State Parkway and local roads nearby.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call police.
