Coffee Shop in Union Square Set to Close

Manhattan's famed Coffee Shop bar and restaurant will be closing after the summer.

The Union Square staple is set to shutter on Oct. 11 after nearly three decades in business, the New York Post first reported.

Co-owner Charles Milite told the Post he was breaking the news to the 150 employees Thursday.

"The times have changed in our industry," he said. "The rents are very high and now the minimum wage is going up, and we have a huge number of employees."

The sceney eatery was frequently featured on the "Sex and the City" TV series.

The news comes a year after two other iconic Union Square restaurants announced their closures: last summer, Thai noodle shop Republic and seafood restaurant Blue Water Grill said they would be closing by the end of 2017; they have since moved out.
