Coronation Street are set to bring some joy to viewers this festive season, with show boss Iain MacLeod keen to steer away from too much vitriol while fans are munching their turkey sandwiches. However, for those expecting this to mean there is going to be a lack of drama, think again as there is more to this years offerings than carols and nativities.

The new year explodes with tales of death and destruction, kicking off 2019 with a literal bang. Corrie clearly have a mix of the feel good and the tragedy this year – but there may even be a twist or two on Christmas Day itself.

Heres what we know so far about the big episodes:

Happy Christmas!

Speaking about what he wants viewers to see this year, Iain shared: Well, the seeds of the stories for Christmas are planted in the big episodes in October, without giving too much away. I wanted it to be a Christmassy Christmas, obviously theres a history in soap of trying to go and do the Angie and Den Christmas where its all acrimony and divorce papers and vitriol.

Thats not really my preference, when you sit down as you try and digest your stuffing balls and sprouts, you need it to be warm and light-hearted in places and you need it to reek of Christmas. So, itll be a Christmassy Christmas, itll have some big, heartbreaking stories within that, itll have a big shock at the end and hopefully itll be a surprising pay off to those stories that youve just seen the inception of here.

Well, maybe not for Jenny…

Jenny is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered marriage after discovering that Johnny cheated on her but recent snaps from behind the scenes shared by Corrie showed Jenny in a heap on the floor, surrounded by concerned friends. Has she fallen ill – and could her life be hanging in the balance this Yuletide?

…or Sally

At the moment, Sally is languishing in prison accused of a crime she didnt commit but with her trial dated for towards the end of the year, viewers are hoping for a Christmas miracle. Of course, Duncan is a wily schemer, so will he see to it that Sally dines on prison sprouts this year?

Or will Sally emerge vindicated – only to discover that Gina has been trying to take her life?

Hit and run horror

Christmas is going to have a shocking sting in the tail for poor Liz as she is run down and left for dead in a shocking hit and run incident – but will she survive? And who is behind it? Fans will likely suspect Jenny or even the malicious fake daughter, Hannah.

But its Johnny who looks set to end up cuffed by police – have they got the right culprit?

Nativity madness

Other sneaky snapshots from the Christmassy world of Corrie showed several of the shows parents including Tyrone, David, Maria and Kevin gathered and ready for the school nativity. With Brian at the helm of the production, will there be disaster afoot?

At any rate, this will provide some much needed comedy scenes and light hearted moments – whether or not the play goes well.

Sineads last Christmas?

Coronation Street shared a snap of Daniel and Sinead taking a wintry walk to the Rovers hand in hand. Sinead appears to have stood her ground and not gone through with any termination but any Christmas celebrations are bound to be tinged with the fear that it could be Sineads last.

Can Daniel and Sinead make the most of it?

Will he be their sperm donor? And will all parties be in agreement? And what will happen when Kate then drunkenly turns to Adam for some very hands on help in what could be her biggest mistake?

Dead end for Lewis

Away from the joys of nativities and reunions at Christmas, new year heralds a tragedy as Lewis is set to meet his maker – meaning heartbreak for Audrey, 20 years after she lost her husband Alf at the same time of year.

But will Lewis be bowing out in disgrace – and might someone have a hand in his demise?
