Daniel Craig will be reprising his role as the spy in the next installment of James Bond, but bosses are now hinting that Idris Elba could be next to take up the mantel.

James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli said shes open to diversifying the role.

The Daily Star reports that Broccoli had a conversation with director Antoine Fuqua about potentially casting the role with a non-white actor. The article says Broccoli told Fuqua it is time for a person of colour to get the role.

She added that casting an ethnic minority actor as 007 will happen eventually.

Idris could do it if he was in shape, she revealed. You need a guy with a physically strong presence. Idris has that.

Elba is baffled by the rumours, and insisted that producers have yet to approach him about the role, and its all up to the will of the people.

The Luther actor said that people only suggest his name for the role because hes black, not because hes right for the role.

He said: Its interesting that the James Bond thing continues on.

I think its more about “we just want to have a black guy play James Bond” rather than “Idris Elba, the actor, play James Bond” Thats the part that Im like “ugh, come on.”

He added: Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male? It could be a woman – could be a black woman, could be a white woman – but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have…do something different with it, why not?”

Though Edris appears a little bemused by talk of his potential role, Henry Cavill wants it bad.

The Superman actor said hed love to do it.

Bond would be a really fun role. Its British, its cool. I think that now that I have my Mission: Impossible badge we can do real stunts and really amp it up as well…
