Emmerdale has been on the receiving end of a huge amount of praise over the representation of Matty Bartons (Ash Palmisciano) transition.

This week marks a huge milestone for the farm worker as he heads towards the operation hes dreamed of – to have top surgery in the next stage of his transition.

Tonight will see some touching scenes between mother and son as Matty receives the surgery hes been waiting years for, and it will feature emotionally charged moments as Matty faces both fear and excitement at moving forward, along with Moira Dingles (Natalie J Robb) concerns as his mother at the risks of going under anaesthetic.

Fans have heaped praise on the show for its transgender representation over the storyline and its raw look at the emotions behind the transition, both for Matty and for those around him.

Viewers took to Twitter to congratulate the show on handling the story brilliantly and for not sensationalising the subject.

Matty was previously known as Hannah Barton and transitioned during his time away from the village without his family knowing as he was afraid how they would react. He arrived back in the village in June 2018 when he snuck into the farm to retrieve his birth certificate to legally change his gender, but was caught by Cain.

Moira reacted badly to his transition at first. Cain was the one to bring the two back together as he attempted to encourage Moira to understand how Matty felt. The two eventually managed to get their relationship back on track.
