A small explosion went off at an Equinox on the Upper West Side on Sunday, blowing out windows, the FDNY said.
No one was injured and the explosion did not appear to be criminal.
At 6:19 p.m., there was a small explosion in the basement of the gym on Broadway between 91st and 92nd streets.
"It was really loud," witness Yianni Manouilidies said. "I got so scared, I ran south."
Before the explosion, the Equinox was evacuated, as well as the buildings on both sides of it, firefighters said. All the buildings are commercial.
About 90 people left the buildings, the FDNY said.
Firefighters said elevated levels of carbon monoxide and an electrical problem were partly to blame. The problem may have started in the boiler.
Con Edison responded to the scene to shut off gas lines and investigate the cause of the explosion. Nine buildings were left without gas and one lane of traffic was closed outside the vuilding for ConEd and emergency crews. ConEd hoped to have gas back up and running by the end of the day.
“The building and block have been safely evacuated with no injuries reported and the club is currently closed," an Equinox spokesperson said in a statement. "We are working closely with city officials and ConEd to investigate the potential cause of the issue as the safety and security of our employees and community is our top priority.”
Firefighters first arrived at about 3:45 p.m. because of a transformer fire below the sidewalk. They noticed high carbon monoxide levels and evacuated the buildings.
