Get Ready for Jerry Springers New Daytime Court Show, Judge Jerry

Watch your back, Judge Judy. Starting next year, there will be yet another daytime courtroom show in the mix—but this one comes courtesy of a daytime legend and former mayor of Cincinnati. As of fall 2019, Jerry Springer will have a gavel of his own.

The new syndicated court show Judge Jerry will premiere next fall from NBCUniversal Television, which also produced The Jerry Springer Show before production halted this summer, Variety reports. The tacky tabloid talk show, which first premiered in 1991, was a decades-long sensation before production came to a close in June. But for those undying Springer fans out there, this new show might be a good enough fix. It will likely air on many of the same stations the old show did—and, per Variety, NBCUniversal is hoping itll be less repellant to some major advertisers, who might have shied away from Springers older, tawdrier work.

“For the first time in my life, I am going to be called honorable,” Springer said in a statement. “My career is coming full circle and I finally get to put my law degree to use after all these years.” Per NBCUniversals description, Variety reports, the new program will be a traditional daytime court show, in which Springer will preside over real cases from real people, and “render a verdict with a fair yet firm hand and always leave litigants with a dose of classic Springer wisdom.” Producers for the new series have not yet been revealed.

A TV standby for decades now, the court show can be very lucrative when done right. Just ask “Judge Judy” Sheindlin, who has been one of TVs highest-paid hosts for years. In fact, this year she became the worlds highest-paid host for the first time, topping Ellen DeGeneres after selling her shows rerun rights. The paycheck? $147 million for the year. Whether the robe and gavel can work the same magic for Springer, however, remains to be seen.
