Marvel fans worldwide have officially gone into mourning AGAIN as GOTG directior James Gunn has just broken all our hearts by confirming that ‘Groot is dead.’

Those that have seen the first film in the Guardians series will know that Vin Diesel’s gigantic Groot sacrificed himself to save the rest of the team, but appeared as the credits rolled replanted as a sapling in a pot.

To some members of the audience, this has always remained somewhat of an iconic moment as it provided a flicker of hope that the same Groot we had come to know and love was the one regrowing. Some fans have held onto that theory. Until now.

Gunn jumped on Twitter to explain that original Groot was well, gone.

This is all started when the director came across a thread which posed, quite frankly a very difficult question on who one would save: baby Groot or a Porg from Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

‘Groot is not an animal! He’s an advanced lifeform! It’s easy!!’ Gunn tweeted.

‘You just sacrificed the life of a thinking being who saved all life in the universe for a single bird.’

When one user chipped in and said that they thought you could simply grow Groot back ‘as evidenced in your film’, Gunn shattered all hopes by confirming that everyone’s Groot is actually the original’s son, aka Groot Jr.

First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son.

‘First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son,’ he tweeted to a fan.

Thanks James! As if Groot’s death wasn’t bad enough.

Baby Groot has very quickly become a fan favourite but it is crazy to think that we now have another Groot that technically is a different person.

This leaves so many questions though because like does Baby Groot really count as that different to the original when he is literally just a growing piece of him? Aren’t they basically just twins? Is the only way to create new Groots by killing the current one?

There is just so many questions to be answered now and it’s all a bit heartbreaking.

And then there’s this horrible truth which really doesn’t help the situation at all.
