Helen Mirren has a love-hate relationship with Netflix. How do we know this? Because at a presentation for her new film at CinemaCon on Tuesday, the actress had this to say: “I love Netflix, but fuck Netflix.”
The dame, according to Variety, received “thunderous applause” for her comment. (After all, she was attending a convention for studios and theater owners.) Mirren was on hand to help Warner Bros. introduce her upcoming film The Good Liar, a thriller co-starring Ian McKellen. She also expanded on her “Fuck Netflix” mindset, praising the glory of going to the movies in a traditional theater: “There is nothing like sitting in the cinema,” she added, per Variety.
This isnt the first time an artist has used the CinemaCon stage to dunk on Netflix. The 2017 convention was a particularly verdant ground for this sentiment, with Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman Tom Rothman declaring, “Netflix my ass!” during his Blade Runner 2049 presentation. Director Christopher Nolan also shared his thoughts on streamers without directly mentioning names, saying, “The only platform Im interested in talking about is theatrical exhibition.” In an interview with IndieWire a few months after, he called Netflixs distribution policy “mindless” and said he would never make a film with the company.
“Why would you?” he added. “If you make a theatrical film, its to be played in theaters. . . . If Netflix has made a great film, they should put it in theaters. Why not? Stream it 90 days later.”
In a later interview, Nolan apologized for his remarks, saying Netflix was “revolutionary” and he “should have been more polite” when expressing his opinion, though he still held that opinion. Ah, how very quaint. It remains to be seen, meanwhile, if Mirren will go back on her words.
