Poor Tommy Wiseau. Even when he hands James Franco redemption on a silver platter, the auteur behind The Room just can’t get the full-blown Hollywood experience he deserves. On Sunday night, the Disaster Artist director brought his inspiration on stage at the Golden Globes before delivering an acceptance speech for Franco’s newly won best-actor award. But when Wiseau reached for the mic, his big-screen imitator laughed, gently brushing Wiseau off and keeping the mic to himself.
Thankfully, we don’t have to wonder what Wiseau would have said if he had gotten hold of the mic; he went ahead and revealed a few words of his planned remarks to The Los Angeles Times after the fact.
Wiseau’s would-be speech is the perfect blend of heartfelt, optimistic, and opportunistic. It’s also very short: “If a lot of people loved each other, the world would be a better place to live,” Wiseau astutely observes. His final thought? “See The Room, have fun, and enjoy life. The American Dream is alive, and it’s real.”
The incomparable director tweeted that message of love on Sunday night as well, proving just how close it is to his heart. It’s too bad that Wiseau did not get a chance to deliver such stirring words on stage—though for what it’s worth, we’re guessing Hugh Jackman’s reaction to the speech would have been about the same either way.
