High pressure brings warmer weather to Southern California

LOS ANGELES — Temperatures will rise slightly today but remain below average for this time of the year before a significant warming trend gets underway Friday, forecasters said.

“The cold air is finally on its way out,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Rorke, describing today as a “transitional day” and adding that the warmer weather will result from an approaching high-pressure system.

Fridays warmup will see temperatures rise 12 degrees and 13 degrees in several L.A. County communities, including Downtown L.A., where Fridays high is forecast to be 82 degrees, and Woodland Hills, where the high will be 92. On the whole, L.A. County temperatures will be 5-10 degrees above normal, Rorke said.

The NWS forecast partly cloudy skies in L.A. County today and highs of 66 degrees in Avalon, Torrance and at LAX; 68 in San Pedro; 69 on Mount Wilson; 70 in downtown L.A.; 71 in Long Beach; 73 in Whittier; 74 in San Gabriel; 75 in Pasadena, Burbank and North Hollywood; 76 in Van Nuys and West Covina; 77 in Santa Clarita; 79 in Northridge and Woodland Hills; and 80 in Palmdale and Lancaster. Temperatures will be more than 10 degrees higher amid sunshine Friday and remain at those levels — even amid cloudy skies — through at least Wednesday.

Sunny skies were forecast in Orange County today, along with highs of 64 in Newport Beach and San Clemente; 65 in Laguna Beach; 72 in Irvine, Mission Viejo and Santa Ana; 73 in Anaheim; and 74 in Fullerton and Yorba Linda. Fridays temperatures will be higher, including a whopping 18 degrees higher in Mission Viejo.

In Riverside County, todays forecast is for mostly sunny skies and highs of 74 in Temecula; 77 in Riverside, Perris, Murrieta and Lake Elsinore; 78 in Menifee; 79 in Hemet; 83 in Desert Hot Springs; 85 in Palm Springs; 87 in Indio, Coachella and Palm Desert; and 88 in Blythe. Temperatures will rise about 14 degrees Friday in Riverside.

In San Bernardino County, todays forecasts include mostly sunny skies and high temperatures of 56 degrees in Big Bear; 58 in Running Springs; 60 in Wrightwood; 72 in Yucaipa; 74 in Rancho Cucamonga; 75 in Hesperia; 76 in Ontario; 77 in Redlands; and 78 in San Bernardino and Victorville. It will be 14 degrees warmer on Friday in San Bernardino.
