This post contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 5, Episode 1.[hhmc]

The world of The Walking Dead is getting more interconnected. We already knew that Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 will welcome another character from the original series, Dwight, to its post-apocalyptic playground—but Sundays premiere subtly introduced a potentially even bigger crossover. It looks like this season will also begin setting up the franchises much-anticipated Rick Grimes movie trilogy. Did you notice a certain familiar logo at the end of this weeks episode?

This season is set a few months in the future from where we left off. The Season 4 finale found our merry group of truckers ready to help as many people as they could find on former journalist Als video tapes. This season begins with them crash landing in a plane. (Apparently, the group commandeered the aircraft during their search for a man named Logan, who appeared on Als tapes.)

So far, their philanthropic quest has been a bit of a bust; everyone in the tapes is either dead or insists they dont need help. And unfortunately, as so often happens, it also turns out the man they were trying to help is actually not a great guy. Logan, who apparently owns the mill where Al, Morgan, and the rest of the group have set up shop, lured them out simply so he could take it back.

Then comes the crossover moment: Al re-examines some footage from after the plane crash, in which she takes down a walker in a strange black uniform, with a curious logo on the front. Its the same logo worn by the people who took Jadis and Rick on the helicopter in The Walking Dead. Al decides to go back and take a look at the dead man one more time—but after she reaches the site, another man in an identical uniform knocks her out with a stun gun.

So, what do we know about these guys? First, theres the obvious: their strange uniforms. In addition to a hard mask/helmet, Al notices the walker she killed is also sporting a uniform lined with some sort of wiring. (It appears to be waterproof as well—a nice perk, given the torrential rain we saw this week.) Among the mans belongings, Al also finds a map and some plastic cards that appeared to depict various states or territories. All feature the same symbol as the uniform. Given the distance between the two series settings—The Walking Dead is set in the D.C. area, while Fear the Walking Dead takes place in Texas—these guys apparently have a pretty expansive reach. One theory thats already emerged? They could be from the Commonwealth.

That move could make a certain kind of sense; Dwight and Rick actually ventured to the Commonwealth together in the original Walking Dead comics. (Though its perhaps worth noting that this field trip did not end well for Dwight.) With our favorite former Savior headed to Fear any day now, this could be one of the shows many repurposed storylines from the comics—but it will take more time before we know for sure.

Another fun hint at whats to come this season? It looks like well finally see Daniel Salazar again. Apparently hes also on one of Als tapes, which show that hes in possession of a plane—and a bunch of other cool stuff. Looks like his conditions have vastly improved since we saw him at the exploding dam in Season 3.

Whatever is to come with Daniel, Dwight, and the helicopter gang, its clear that AMC is dedicated to making the various threads of its marquee franchise as interwoven as possible—presumably in the hopes that each component of the overarching universe will become increasingly indispensable. Ratings for Fear the Walking Dead have, after all, been trending downward for years; perhaps this new connection to a bigger overarching story will make a once ancillary show more necessary viewing for hardcore fans. Lets just hope this seasons new vRead More – Source
