Set It Up has already been heralded as one of Netflixs best original movie launches, a pure-hearted romantic comedy reviving the very bones of the genre. And naturally, sequel talks have sprung up as well, because why not! In an interview with E! News writer Katie Silberman and director Claire Scanlon revealed that theyve jokingly kicked ideas around already dreaming up plot points that could pick up where the first film—which revolved around a pair of lowly assistants who fall for each other while trying to “Cyrano” their awful bosses—left off.
“Katies already come up with the idea. She already has a plan. We were joking about it on set,” Scanlon said. “We really like these characters!”
She said that Scanlon has envisioned a Set It Up 2 that revolves around Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell) going from setting up their high-powered employers, Rick (Taye Diggs) and Kirsten (Lucy Liu), to setting up their own friends at a wedding (think of the hijinks!). Scanlon, however, thinks the focus should be firmly on the bosses this time around. “I was like, No, the sequel should be about Rick and Kirsten! Theyre not getting together, but their respective relationships.”
Scanlon also noted that shes still fixated on Kirsten, a powerful sports journalist whose icy demeanor thaws over the course of the film. “To me, what would be interesting to see is Kirsten. Where does she go next? The character Rick has clearly opened a door for her and made her realize, Im worthy of a personal life and I deserve this,” Scanlon said. “Id love to see where that goes. Honestly, its the Kirsten character that I would want to explore. Theres a world out there that you would want to explore. Itd be interesting to see where it goes.”
Prior to this interview, Deutch jokingly threw her support behind a sequel while posting some behind-the-scenes set photos on her Instagram. “So ummm… do we get to make a second or wut @netflix,” she wrote in the caption.
Considering Netflixs bottomless pockets, its newfound dedication to romantic comedies, and its proclivity to give second and third and fourth lives to projects that perform well (Bright 2 is coming soon, after all), Set It Up 2 seems like it really could happen, so long as the original team is on board. Long live the Set It Up cinematic universe.
