The first picture of Will Smith as Genie in Aladdin was only revealed a few hours ago, but its already the subject of much online discussion.

First, the actor was forced to respond to backlash that he didnt appear blue – like the original animated character voiced by Robin Williams.

However, he assured fans that the Entertainment Weekly cover showed him in human/disguise form, and he will be altered blue with CGI in the film.

Now, an eagle-eyed fan has pointed out that the Genies ponytail looks strikingly familiar to the one worn by Goro in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series.

Will Smiths Genie in Aladdin got the Goro hairdo from Mortal Kombat, he tweeted.

Because nothing is safe from the meme-treatment in 2018, another user then replied to the tweet and pointed out some similarities between Ariana Grandes famous high ponytail.

Will Smith hasnt seen the tweet yet, but were patiently waiting for a witty response.

On the Entertainment Weekly cover, Will is joined by actor Mena Massoud who will play the prince, and British actress Naomi Scott who is set to star as Princess Jasmine.

He told the magazine that he felt the pressure of taking over such a beloved role.

Whenever youre doing things that are iconic, its always terrifying, Will admitted. The question is always: Where was there meat left on the bone? Robin didnt leave a lot of meat on the bone with the character.

But director Guy Ritchie is confident the Bad Boys actor can bring his individuality to the Genie.

The great thing about the role of the Genie is that its essentially a hyperbole for who that individual actor is, he said. So its a wonderful platform and tapestry for an actor to fill his boots on.

Aladdin is due to arrive in UK cinemas 24 May 2019.
