Joaquin Phoenix is set to play Batmans arch-nemesis in a new DC origins movie, which has officially been finalised at Warner Bros.

The studio have released a statement confirming the project is underway, with The Hangovers Todd Phillips to direct the film which is meant to be different from comic book superhero movies.

According to the statement, the Joker origin story will be an exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.

Phoenixs Joker however will be a separate standalone interpretation on the character, which isnt connected to the DC universe depicted in Justice League and Suicide Squad.

Production on the movie is set to kick off in September with a possible 2019 release.

Martin Scorsese was previously attached to the movie as a producer but is now reportedly not involved, with Scorseses producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff on board with Richard Baratta.

The budget for the film is also in the $55 million range, which is significantly lower than the usual blockbuster superhero flick – so could we about to see a more restrained, dare we say, real interpretation of The Joker?

This isnt the only Joker movie in the works, with Jared Leto also starring in and producing a standalone film based on his Suicide Squad interpretation which everyone loved, right?

For now, we can look forward to the rest of the DC line-up – which includes Wonder Woman: 1984, Aquaman and Shazam!
